Deborah Brandt (2015) suggests that writing is taking over reading as the literacy skill of critical consequence in the current era (p. 161). In this online course, Dr Noella Mackenzie will provide rationales for continuing to teach handwriting, as well as the keyboarding skills necessary for writing on a computer. Contemporary research supporting the teaching of handwriting and keyboarding (much of which comes from outside the field of education) will be shared. She will also explore suggestions for what and how to teach both handwriting and keyboarding including: what to teach, how to teach, and how to assess.

Completing Handwriting and Keyboarding in the 21st Century will contribute 4 hours of  online PD addressing standard descriptors 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 3.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers 

For NSW teachers: Completing Handwriting and Keyboarding in the 21st Century will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum/EYLF addressing standard descriptors 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 3.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW. Additional time can be documented as Elective PD.
