ON DEMAND: Reading Comprehension for Years 5-6

Presented by Dr Bronwyn Parkin. Comprehending written text is the purpose of reading. Yet comprehension, and particularly the ability of students to infer, is an ongoing concern for many teachers.  This is the third of three online seminars focussing on different year levels: F-2,3-4, 5-6.

Who should participate?

  • Teachers of students Years 5-6
  • Teacher librarians
  • Early career and pre-service teachers

Why participate?  In an hour we will closely study one book shortlisted for the CBCA book awards 2022, to comprehend all aspects of the book: Illustrations, text structure, literary devices and of course vocabulary.

This is a perfect opportunity for colleagues to work together in a year, stage or staff meeting.

Book: The Book of Chance by Sue Whiting    Please have a copy of this book handy or at least be familiar with the text.

"This complex narrative is set south of Sydney in Wollongong, significantly far away from where the main character Chance Callahan started her life. Suspense and tension are deftly created through the use of a flashback device. Themes of honesty and truth underpin the events." CBCA Judges
