Course attendance and requirements:
Participants are required to either attend two live online workshop sessions via Zoom:
- Session 1- Zoom: Wednesday 8/5/24 at 3.45pm - 4.45pm
- Session 2- Zoom: Wednesday 29/5/24 at 3.45pm - 4.45pm
Or watch these recorded, within a week of the original streaming date. The course also includes 1 hour of online interactive self-paced study including tasks and readings and suggested pre-test and post- test activities for teachers to implement in their classrooms.
Participants are required to complete a pre-reading task prior to the first Zoom session and bring a mentor/quality text they would like to use to teach punctuation in their classroom.
What is this course about?
Punctuation plays a crucial role in literacy, enhancing the meaning of texts in both reading and writing. It guides how text is read, adding clarity and nuance. In this course, educators will explore the functional and stylistic roles of punctuation in written communication.
Participants will learn practical strategies aligned with the NSW K-6 English syllabus, AC v9 English, and the National Literacy Learning Progression (ACARA). Through a combination of theory and hands-on activities, educators will gain the skills and confidence to help students master punctuation, enhancing their ability to communicate clearly and effectively in various contexts.
Learning outcomes:
Through completing this course, participants will:
- Develop knowledge of the structure and elements of punctuation related outcomes K-6 from the NSW K-10 English syllabus (2022) and AC v9 English curriculum.
- Gain an understanding of the National Literacy Learning Progression.
- Design evidence-based teaching activities and learning experiences aligned with the syllabus content to effectively teach punctuation.
- Implement practical strategies for teaching punctuation effectively
- Enhance skills and confidence in helping students master punctuation, improving their ability to communicate clearly and effectively in various contexts.
