 This session will be held in Newtown NSW. Teachers will need to bring their own device. Teachers will be sent materials the week prior and are recommended these are downloaded prior to session.

This course aligns with English Textual Concepts and Learning Processes (2017), a resource co-published by NSW Department of Education and English Teachers Association NSW. The presenters unpack the new NSW English syllabus K – 6 and guide participants through the selection of quality texts for understanding and responding to literature. Participants will use English textual concepts within the new NSW syllabus to plan and create quality English units that address your students' needs. Bring texts you're planning to use with your students to immediately apply your learning, start planning and take away the basis for a unit of work to teach in your classroom.

Participants in this course will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Deepen your understanding of the new NSW English K-6 Syllabus, and its implications for teaching and learning
  • Understand and use English textual concepts for planning and teaching
  • Investigate ways of integrating the teaching of literature, literacy and language
  • Understand how to select and use mentor texts effectively
  • Use a process for developing quality English units

To tailor this workshop to your context, please bring -

  • Digital device with the NSW syllabus bookmarked or downloaded
  • Two examples of quality literature, only one of which can be a picture book or novel (the other might be a play, poetry, non-fiction, film, website, TV show, podcast, etc.)
  • A current English unit of work, not developed using the concept-based approach.
