This course integrates music and the Arts into the morning English block, to engage young learners and support them in their beginning reading journey. Teachers will learn to support structured literacy teaching of phonics, phonological awareness, vocabulary, oral language, comprehension and fluency, through the use of music, including a range of chants, rhymes and songs . Aligned with the NSW Syllabus outcomes for reading in K-2 and incorporating NSW Creative Arts K-6 Syllabus outcomes, this course is perfect for teachers wanting to enhance their explicit teaching to help reinforce and consolidate learning through embedding musical activities into their practice.

Learning outcomes:

  • Gain informative, practical and hands-on teaching strategies that enrich the teaching of early reading, drawing on contemporary, quality literature including multimodal texts, targeting Early Stage students
  • Learn how to enhance explicit teaching of early literacy skills by embedding musical activities in classroom practice
  • Understand the link between early reading acquisition and the use of music in teaching
  • Learn about neuromusicology, a branch of brain research that explains how learning to read and learning music are complementary cognitive processes as they draw on common neural resources
  • Address K-2 English (2022) and NSW Creative Arts K-6 (2006) syllabus outcomes
  • Collect tools to strengthen early reading teaching through collaborative professional learning
  • Plan how to tailor learning to address the specific learning needs of students

Who should participate?

  • K – 2 teachers
  • Assistant Principals Early Stage 1 and Stage 1
